In 2005, Georgia Family Council was chosen by the Georgia Department of Human Resources to lead the Georgia Healthy Marriage Initiative (GAHMI). This five-year program is helping to build and sustain healthy marriages and families in six communities across Georgia. These communities include: Columbus, Northeast Metro (Duluth, Norcross), Southeast Metro (Lithonia), Macon, Thomasville and an area of inner-city Atlanta known as NPU-V (Pittsburgh, Mechanicsville).

GAHMI is helping these communities increase the number of healthy marriages, reduce the number of divorces and assist individuals in avoiding unhealthy relationships. It focuses on leadership development and informing the public about the importance of strong, healthy relationships.

Since the program began, 350 leaders have been certified in national, best- practice resources that focus on strengthening marriages, preparing couples for marriage and meeting the relationship needs of single parents, youth and stepfamilies. Trainers are educating individuals and couples throughout churches, community centers, businesses, government agencies and other family support organizations across Georgia.
